Can you make a living by reading books?
I absolutely love to read books of any genre. I'm found everyday with my nose in a book for over an hour. I was wondering if it's possible to make a living by reading and reviewing books.
Public Comments
- maybe start your own business!
- Yes, editors and publishers do that. That way you get the scoop on new books before the general public does.
- and you can also write book reviews!
- You can make decent money by reviewing books, if you're also good at it. You can make a living just by reading books, but probably not a very good one. Every big-name publisher has proof-readers who scan pre-publication copies for typos. Sometimes they also use fact-checkers who probably make a bit more. Unfortunately, you wouldn't be able to pick and choose what you read.
- Yes. You can be a book reviewer. But you'll probably have to read for more than just an hour a day.
- I've heard of a profession where people read books to decide which ones should be made into a movie. I'm not sure how you would go about this, but I heard about once a long time ago and thought that would be MY ideal job!! I thought I'd pass it along, perhaps you know someone else who knows more than me!
- Yes u can..u can wright books reviews!!!
- yep
- Yeah...start a huge book collection and open a used bookstore/coffeeshop. Before you know it, every hipster and emo kid in town will be flocking there.
- Indeed you can, but -for reviews- publishers tend to ask for readers with technical skills such as analysis, critical comments and ability to relate a book with others; also, you must write a report on your reading, whether suggesting the publication of the book or not and exposing your arguments. Proof readers are useful, but not very well paid. And in any case, your deadline is usually ten days, at the most, so start getting used to read around twelve hours a day.
- many magazine's (PEOPLE, Time, Buisness Week, etc) actually hire people to read books and critic them and write a short critic about it. ive actually looked into it. you can go to People Magazine's website and send a message to the editor. good luck!
- Just marry someone who pays the bills and you can read all day
- Many of the publishing houses have people who read and review books for them. It is literally their business to read books. I too am an avid reader and at one time tried to get a job with one fo these companies. Unfortunately, I lacked two things. 1. A degree in English with a specialization in literature, and 2. I didn't read quickly enough. I read approximately 150 - 200 pages a day while holding down a full time job, so this surprised me quite a bit. The degree however would require that I go back to school for a few years, and that is quite frankly not in the cards for me. I would suggest that you approach the publishing houses (such as Simon and Schuster), and see what they are requiring for that type of job today (I did this about 15 years ago)
- no way all of your life you would waste all that time and not get married and not have no kids and not get a scholar ship!!!
