According to Hofferth (assigned reading on Welfare Reform), why are mothers with children under the age of three at a higher risk of returning to welfare? What could be done to help such mothers?

  1. NO job skills, welfare will be over an need to get income source. Generation after generation do this. Solve problem- stop giving out money or give training and jobs. Welfare is an incentive itself: No heat bills, no medical bills, subsidized rents, food stamps, free summer camp, free programs, etc. I should be on welfare. I am still trying to pay off my oil bill from the winter!
  2. Because daycare so expensive and very little help is offered in the way of daycare cost relief. I have 3 children ages 2, 5 and 17 - obviously the 17 yr old doesn't need daycare but daycare cost for the two younger ones would be roughly 1000/month if I was not a student and recieving special help.
