I would like to start doing volunteer work for tutoring children on their reading...where would I start?

Would this volunteer work be through a church or at the school? And how long does one usually tutor for, an hour?

Volunteer at a local public school. You may be able to do this during the school day - or before or after school. You may have to go through a background check and fingerprinting - and if you do - remember it's to protect the children from the freaks of the world and not a direct distrust of you. Volunteering at a public school is such an awesome thing to do - they need so much help in so many ways - and it's all for the good of the children.
check with your local grade school. some schools even pay u for tutoring. I used to tutor at my daughters school. I would go in for about a half hour, until I was asked to tutor several hours a week for pay. The kids enjoy it and it does make a difference in their lives.
I know that some public libraries have classes that help teach childeren to read. Public schools would be my next choice. Good for you too. Its great to see someone stepping up and doing something good for the community like that. i wish I could find time to do the same.
i would say a community center, church members and parents alike might not like strangers in there area, but in centers it's more open. and one hour is good, maybe even two if help is low.
Try your local public library. They all seem to have tutoring programs for kids.
