What kinds of reading material do you recommend to improve writing skills in English?
Public Comments
- Classical English Literature, quality magazines like National Geographic, no pop stuff, that will only confuse you more. Look for penguin readers, they are easy to understand, read some Agatha Christie novels, Thomas B. Costain, Taylor Caldwell, Oscar Wilde, Roald Dahl. Well written material is more helpful than anything else. The more you read the better your writing skills will improve, because you will begin to imitate to a certain extent, the material you have been reading.
- Quality children's literature: Cynthia Rylant Vera B Williams Jane Yolen Leo Lionni
- Read the dictionary first, few words or pages a day, besides that select a book of a well-know author, preferably some book you like to read... As you read, go through the dictionary for the meanings of words and identify the usage of the words in the sentences, simultaneously, improve writing (if bad), by writing a few pages per day, either cursive or otherwise neatly...
- A good grammar program would help this as well. Check out homeschool sites for ideas of programs such as Rainbow Resources.
- Give the student thebook you have read before. Let them highlight and annotate and outline the book and give a report on the book and for the final let them write and the book in MLA format so you can determine if the read the book.
