Reading train - Improve your reading skills

How can I improve my sight reading skills?

For singing. I'm an ok sight reader but only if I'm started off and can hear what the key sounds like. I have a singing competition coming up and I will be tested on sight reading, it's NYSSMA level 6 by the way. What do they make you do with the sight reading and how can I improve?

  1. Unfortunately I don't know a good way to "cram" for a sight-singing exam, but singing on solfege (do re mi) is the most accurate way of getting the notes correct. Know what key of music you're in, and practice reading music you've never seen... test yourself on a keyboard if you have one. One of the main things they look for is that you KEEP SINGING. Many people get caught up in a mistake and then forget to continue. Good luck!
  2. The only way is to practise I guess. It'll help to practise with an instrument to train up your ears so you'll know if you got it right or wrong.
