Children at school. Do they read enough. What do you think of the importance of reading.?
We are a family of readers. While on holiday we bought a second hand book and gave it to one of the children to read. After reading the book the child decided that that was the career to follow. That book is on my bedside table and when I see it, it brings back good memories. Do not underestimate the power of reading.

- Yes i agree it is very important to read because you can really learn a lot and it improves spelling and general knowledge as well - i love reading, a brand new book is magic to me and the best gift ever
- I could not agree with you more, now days, kids, are so involved with computers, television, DVDs, that they do not find time to read, and yet reading is the most important of them all. The girls and I are keen readers, but because we are in a European country, and have to learn several other languages from scratch, they are now reading books in those languages, which I insist on as it is a sure method of mastering another language. I had to set boundaries with the reading, for example, if you dont read, you cant watch TV, or go onto the computer, in this way I ensure that they read before the other....
- I make my children read everyday. My youngest is two. I have always read books. It is important for them to read whatever they choose. Sometimes I don't always like their choice of books, but if they are prepared to spend time reading then I don't mind. I also take my children to the Library where they appreciate how to look after books.
- yes, it important to read because it help u in the future and thing like that.
- I cannot agree more with you....my Father forced us to read when I was small, we were also a family of readers. I love reading and later because I read so much, I could read extremely fast. It helped me so much in my life. Because I could read so fast I could study much faster than other students at Varsity...I have also introduced my little daughter to the "art" of reading. It is quite sad because it seems to me children do not read as much today, too much TV, PS 2 and 3, computers. Also the Public Libraries are getting such small subsidies, the quality of the books are so old and tatty. I have collected about 3 000 books, a mini library of my own. I love second hand bookshops, jumble sales with books etc. I cannot wait to introduce my 9 year old to all my treasures when she gets older.
- Our modern world does not present many opportunities for people to sit down, relax and read a book. There are so many interruptions that it is difficult for children to concentrate. It is like watching telly, and the silly ads keep popping up. When one reads a book, one has to actually THINK for oneself, creating an image of what is happening in the story. In telly the images are all there, one does not need much brain activity to watch TV! Reading is so important, we should see that it does not become a lost art. I love reading, and so does my husband and our 2 daughters. We always get good value out of our library cards.
