Reading train - Improve your reading skills

Is there any age appropriate book that you would keep your children from reading for religious reasons?

  1. Yeah, that thing called the Bible. Rape, murder, prostitution, genocide, intolerance, slavery, oppression...
  2. No. All books, regardless of their content have their values.
  3. Yes the Bible
  4. From what I've been told about the Golden Compass books, I think that might be the only one. Even then I would like to read it myself first before passing that judgment however. Luckily though my sons are autistic, and have very selective reading tastes. Golden Compass probably won't ever be an issue any way.
  5. Amendment the 1st is the greatest Amendment of the Constitution. Amendment the 2nd gives me the muscle to freely use that right.
  6. Absolutely not. My daughter was allowed to read whatever books she wished (as long as they were age appropriate). If she wanted to read something, I would get it for her myself. This includes the Bible and the Book of Mormon.
  7. As long as it is age appropriate, I don't care what they choose to read about. They can learn to think and grow as an individual, maybe they will discover a truth that I have not.
  8. I found "The Red Tent" too cynical, too "raw" and too intentionally iconoclastic for my 13 y.o. daughter who was capable of reading any book of any complexity. I felt she needed a few more years of maturity to be able to put that twist on the story of Dinah into a well-balanced perspective. But it's definitely a book for adults. Age-appropriate kids' books? No, she read 'em all.
  9. The Bible. I was brought up xtian, and I was scared and had nightmares as a child because of some of the stuff I read in that book. And I was forced to read it through, cover to cover, every year. I don't want my children to use a book that speaks of killing just because God says so, and that you can kill your brother because his sacrifice better than yours, but God didn't make that clear to begin with. I don't want my children to know that it is ok to kill men to sleep with their wives, and be loved by God for it (David). I don't want my kids to believe that it is ok to torture people for the sake of "God" and converting. I mean, c'mon! The Catholic Church apologized for the "Holy Crusades", now recognizing them as mass genocide. That would be like telling my kids to follow Hitler because he died and is now in heaven because God is a forgiving God. Geez! I'm off my soap box now.
  10. Children under the age of 6 should not read the Origin of Species by Darwin.
  11. it is my job to protect my chrildren, haveing said that; yes there many. Ps if you do not care what your children read that is up to you.
