addiction to reading books?

im a complete book worm! i like reading becasue it helps me relax and calm down and not think about......bad stuff....is a way of putting it (you might want to check out my other ? for more details). but that's the problem! some people are addicted to drugs, or alchol, or food er somthing. but i seriously think im addicted to books. i could read for ever and ever and ever......what draws the line of an addictin && doing somthing for one's personal enjoyment? and is this a bad habit? yay! im not the only one! i completely agree-it relaxes me and makes me feel like i can be a completely different person. i dont think i can give out 10 points because i like all of the awnsers. thanks very much for you words of wisdom!

  1. It's not a bad habit, I'm the same way. Hahaha. Reading is good for you and your mind! Sorry, I'm desperate! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080108193032AAdcfK7&r=w
  2. no it's not addictive... it makers you a better thinker, more intellectual from being exposed to so many different authors, points of view, classics, genre novels, etc. I starting reading like you at age 10, reading at a level way beyond my years. i think books are amazing... they help you use your imagination, try to out think bad guys, plot twists, and question why certain books were written the way they are. Not to mention you are training your brain to THINK -- not to depend on the Internet and every instant-now devices America loves. Read all you want, the more the better. that's what books are for.
  3. I, too, have a compulsion to read and have been that way for as long as I can remember. I am bipolar and have used my love of reading to help me get through some tough times, but I also do it simply because I just love it. Sure, I will admit it is an escape sometimes, but not most of the time. I shop for books the way other people shop for clothes. There are books in my car (in case I ever break down), in my office, one in my handbag and even in the laundry so I have something to do while waiting for the spin cycle to finish. Reading so much has not hurt me, in fact it has broadened my mind. If I go to someone's place, the first thing I do is check out to see if they have bookshelves. Don't feel you are compensating or addicted: just lap it up and enjoy it. There is a term for people who are like us: we are 'bibliophiles'. There are some great online reading groups as well, which will help you extend your understanding of some of the authors you read. I'm sure there is one there for your age group, and if not, why not start one?
  4. I have the same "addiction" and for me it started when I was young I wish more children had this "addiction" It's the best form of escape I have found. I get so involved and for awhile I can be someone else somewhere else
