  1. i like it....its one of my favorite pass times. guess it depends on what you are interested in tho....
  2. books are so much better because on the internet, webpages can be hacked into and changed, you can't do that with books!!!!(at least i hope not!) and with books, you can be sure that they are accurete. unlike webpages
  3. They are two different things. Reading internet sites doesn't exclude books and the other way around (books are not merely a source of information). So yes, I think reading books is a really good/pleasant/useful/relaxing thing to do and I hope people will not get all hooked up in the Internet thing and loose their interest in books. It's better for the eyes too :))
  4. Reading anything is good, but reading a book that get's your imagination going is the best thing for you.
  5. Internet sites cater to the 1 minute attention span. You'd very rarely find as in depth info as in a book. Internet resources are cheap to produce, so the accuracy and reliability of the information is entirely up to you to evaluate. Not that there aren't enough stupid books out there as well, but the standard is on average higher. And if you read a standard text book about any subject, you know it's been edited and proofread and quite a number of people checked it for accuracy. That's just for textbooks. Reading for pleasure is still reading for pleasure, and I still prefer any book to a laptop. For one thing the contrast of the printing is better, less strain on the eyes.
  6. Reading books is NOT a waste of time! You don't always read to get information, you know? You read a fictional book...you get FICTIONAL info...it's not real. Why do you read it? Because it's fun. And it's expands your imagination. You know, most information on the internet is false; saying anyone can hack into a computer and change every word.
  7. Absolutely!
  8. Books are far more interesting and give more detail and descriptions. When you go online some things may be wrong. Its much better to read so you can get the answer or info from the direct source.
  9. It's good for entertainment. When it comes to researching information, the internet's better, but if you've noticed, most of the 'entertaining' stuff you come by on the internet is basically someone getting kicked in the groin by a goat. I'm not saying that's not funny, but it's not very intelligent.
  10. Books are way better than the internet. Anyone can put anything on the internet. A publisher much more critical and is not likely to let a book with false information go to print. Also, you don't have to wait for a book to load up or need to plug in a computer to do so, you can crack a book anytime anywhere.
  11. no, reading books isn't a waste of time. no way. i don't even think i need to give a reason, because people will just agree with me. and if you think otherwise, then you are a very sad person.
  12. Yes reading is a good thing. Reading is not just for information gathering. It is a way to get away from it all, or to try to figure out a mystery. I like reading because I like to imagine what everything looks like, the location the people. I don't want to see a seductive kiss I want to imagine it. I guarantee you my imagination is better than any movie kiss. I can hear a better blood curdling scream in my imagination. So read and imagine.
  13. We gaze into screens incessantly now. We stare at computer screens, television screens, and now telephone screens. Books provide a necessary break both for our eyes and our minds. They are completely worth while. I don't really even understand how that can be an even trade.
  14. Reading books is so0 worth it...... It makes you **smarter** =]]
  15. It's not true, sorry to disagree, but the Internet is full of wrong information. You can read it if you want, but you may find other people who read books will know more and know better than you. Reading books is the best way to acquire accurate information.
  16. I would defend my point regarding reading books in the sense that it's worth wasting time since it's better than wasting one's time by other reckless, futile and unwise means. I think the point you mention might be popped up in the head of some geniuses who have such a familiar, oldish question because some of them, presumably, don't like nor enjoy reading books. My query is: How can we be learned unless we read and read till the end of time? A great man of letters, Samuel Johnson, said, "You can never be wise unless you love reading."
  17. still a great thing to do...it's fun and entertaining, not just educational...
  18. It certainly should not be Books versus Internet. They are almost totally different things both are very valuable for learning and entertainment.
  19. Reading isnt something you are forced to do. It is a past time. I think that reading is something you enjoy doing just like surfing the web. You cant really use your imagination as much looking up information on the computer but whatever floats your boat. I do want to leave you with this.....reading will never be a bad thing to do.
  20. In my opinion, reading a book is the real thing. Just like I'd rather see a movie at the cinema than on TV or on my PC. Just like the food that my mother cooks is better that any other food, no matter how fancy the restaurant. Holding a book in my hand makes me feel closer to the author somehow, it gives me a sense of intimacy that I don't find while reading on my PC. As for "getting new information"... what is really new on this planet? :) The same things happen over and over again, only the setting changes. :)
  21. absolutly! nothing is better than smelling an old book or entering into a library.... reading internet pages.. well.. they distract if you are really bored and you don't know what to do while you are exploring... but nothing compares to a real book
  22. it is never a waste of time,a book is a best friend ever
  23. the point is not "absorbing information", the point is learning the slow pleasure of studying something in depht- new information is not always the best- , to keep memory of the past ( someone said that those who ignore their own history are condemned to repeat it), to be enchanted by a writer and led away to other wor(l)ds, and to become master of your own and other languages, to enrich it with new words and styles. And - of course- criticising and analysing teach you to think with your own head. The internet, tv, do exacty the contrary.
