Reading train - Improve your reading skills

Reading books and improving writing and speech?

I love reading books. People tell me reading books help improve in those two areas. But, it doesn't seem that way. Is it because you have to read a certain book because the only books i like reading are those fantasy books. Like Harry Potter, Eragon, LOTR, Narnia, etc.

  1. A good way to improve your "language skills" is by doing word puzzles (e.g. crossword puzzles, word searches, boggle type games) they will help you to expand your vocabulary and therefore, your speech. Improving writing is a little different. Maybe try some editing software read books on grammar and proper punctuation. Then, practice.
  2. Any kind of reading should improve your vocabulary, speech, and writing, but if you see no improvement maybe you should expand your library. Sense you like fantasy you might also enjoy Stephen King, V.C. Andrews, and others in that vein. Work your way up to best sellers. One book I recommend to everyone is Aztec by Gary Jennings. It is captivating !! It has everything, blood thirsty Aztecs, war, romance, history, and a great story line. You can get it in a used book store or on line at alibris.com. Enjoy.
