Reading train - Improve your reading skills

Teachers- Can you recommend a cheap reading program for high school student who needs to increase levels?

I am a SPED teacher and need help with high school reading. I have two students, 10th and 12th, who read on a 3rd grade level. I am looking for material to use so that I can increase their levels. I only get about $100 to buy needed materials. What are your suggestions? We have accelerated reader but that is it. I would like to increase their levels as much as possible. Is their anything free on the web? Does anyone know where or by whom that I could get a computer program donated? I need help! Thanks for input!

  1. Our school uses "Be A Better Reader" with several different levels but I don't know the cost. They seem to achieve good results. Especially with the ESL students.
  2. Think about hitting garage sales for comic books, kids computers with reading programs, etc. You can also type messages for these kids daily with a joke, a helpful homework tip, a word of encouragement and ask tehm to give you feedback in writing, a simple sentence will do.
  3. readinga-z..com it does cost a little but it provides many resources.
  4. I agree that Be a Better Reader can be good. They are leveled. Others that I like come from Jamestown books -- especially the timed readings. Even those written for very low readers show that they have an older student in mind. The Wild Side books are also very fun from the same publisher. This publisher will also send you a perusal copy before you decide to buy.
