- the library allows you to borrow books
- Use your local library, or go to local used book stores. You can also download some books from www.gutenberg.org.
- Try downloading books from www.esnips.com--- they usually come in pdf format or word format and are free! If you are very new to this habit-- try books by Enid Blyton-- they slowly build up a good vocabulary!
- if you want to start reading a book find an auther you like and if this author has a series keep reading that series
- I agree about the library, we were poor but I read tons of borrowed books. Perhaps ask teachers if they have access to some free books. We have freecycle here and people are always giving away boxes of books. Check the charities as people give books to them also. Put up some posters asking for some books or start a book drive yourself, go about the city and ask people to donate books or buy books. There are a lot of programs for putting books in the hands of children to encourage reading. Ask a teacher or librarian for help!
- Check the public library or school library. Watch out! Some book stores have different prices in books. Look around before you by a book.
- I think he was trying to say that he is "very poor" in the habit of reading, not financially. Well, I don't know, that's how I interpreted what he said. Anyway, first you should tell yourself what interests you most. Fantasy? Horror? Romance? Suspence? Science-Fiction?Realistic Fiction? Non-Fiction? It all depends on what you like. When you are sure what is, for example if you say you like Fantasy best, you should ask a question saying which would be a great Fantasy book that would get you into the habit of reading. If indeed you like Fantasy books, you should try the Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings--those are the best of the best, and they have movies to go along with them, so it's even better. For Horror there is always good ol' Stephen King. Anyway, I don't want to get all wordy and name all my favorite authors. I hope I helped.
- try borrowing books from your friends who read. Then they might have good recomendations.
- King Fortis the Brave - it's one of those rare books that pulls you right in and you get so involved you don't notice you're reading. It would be a great one to start with!
- I would start with King Fortis the Brave only because of its length - just under 200 pages. If you do okay with that, then I would move up to the Harry Potter and Eragon books.
