What kind of teacher would have children reading about euthanizing an infant in 7th grade. Poynette WI does? The teachers here have 7th and 8th graders reading books that is very descriptive about like the above. That book tells how a boy watches his father inject the needle into the infants forehead because the veins in the arms are to small and how the baby jerks and cries and then lays still stares off with glassy eyes and watches his father dispose of the baby. Another book describes dog weaseling, pig copulation and slaughtering a pet pig, all very descriptive. My son and I cried. Why would teachers force this stuff on kids and then wear a catholic necklace? These books won awards in 1972 and 73 but wasn't smoking at 16 legal, drinking at 18 and marijuana and LSD and sex with anyone was ok. But 30 some years later teachers still have kids reading these books even though they are #14 and #17 on the top 100 challenged books that should be banned. What could a teacher be thinking? Is it no wonder kids are mixed up these days when reading like this is supported by a school
How can we encourage our children to learn to enjoy reading? As a college teacher, sadly, I see many high school graduates pass my way who have great difficulty reading any book, text or otherwise. They often show a great distain for reading. This includes material presented on-line. I have seen how the love for reading developed early in childhood carries over to make a person an effective reader of material necessary to function and perform adequately in our modern society. I also know that it takes time and practice to become an effective reader, thus, the time and conditions necessary to integrate readership into ones life involve more than just the time spent and text material supplied in school. As parents, what techniques have you used at home to encourage and continue to encourage your children to develop a love for reading?
What is the best age to begin reading the Harry Potter books to my children? I have two children. One is five and one is three months old. The oldest has had to deal with the death of his maternal grandfather, his paternal grandmother, his maternal great-grandmother, and his paternal great-grandfather. He is scared sometimes at night and has a very sensitive heart-- he's very disturbed by the violence of others. I am wondering when to introduce the kids to the books, since they will all be out before they begin reading any of them. How to pace them, when to start. When will it mean the most, since there is no longer any waiting between releases. I have not read any of the books in the series myself.
What age did you start reading to your children? I started to read to my daughter at about 4 months but have recently stopped because she really is NOT interested and if she does sit still long enough to acknowledge what i am doing she just want to attack and eat the book (she has recently become mobile). She is a wiggle worm and just does not sit still or like to be held for any longer than 2 mins.....so now i feel guilty for not reading to her more, my health nurse says it is a MUST do task to increase their vocabulary...what do you think???
How much time does your child spend reading? I'm interested in how much 'time' parents with grade school children have their children read each day. We homeschool and we are using curriculum that has 'readers' for several subjects. How much reading do you do not counting any 'readers'? What types of books are you using? My son is 7 y/o and doing 2nd grade work for the most part.
What can we do to encourage more children to read? Books come in all shape and sizes. They come in fantasies and realities. We can learn from them. We develop our comprehesion skills and speed in reading. It's a wonder why less children read but since the development of the internet I guess, they realize how simple and much fun they will get from the internet. Most information found in the internet are usually coming from books, so why do they bother with the internet when there are books. I guess it's more cheaper, but the rewards of simply reading is something hard to explain
Where can I find websites about methods of teaching children to read? I need websites about the best methods to teach children reading. Here's the catch: they cannot have a bias, such as religious or political to the point where it affects their opinion... and they must be credible sources. I need them for a research paper. The hard part is acquiring non-biased, non-chatroom and blog discussions of Phonetics, phonics, etc. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My daughter is 19.Is she ok watching cartoons, reading children books and having fun with kids? My point is her behaviour is not so appropriate on her age. Of course I'd appreciate if she read more reference books, adult fiction...or whatever......not the baby sitters' club series, right? She always asks what's wrong about cartoons...shs says even grown ups watch cartoons too.I'm quite speechless about her question. My friends always said she is so good that she plays with their children without the generation gap.Yeah...really...she even plays hide and seek...and all those kids game....not for their sake..but enjoys herslf too.Am I too nerious about this?
Punish your children with reading? Would anyone here, current parents or not, punish their children by making them read a book? (I'm asking because the parents on Nanny 911 did that tonight and I was appalled, and couldn't believe someone would actually do that) Also want to clarify that the parents were doing this - NOT the nanny, and that I would never do this myself
This Lil Piggy asks: Is the Bible appropriate for reading by children? If you cop oput and answer, "Rightly divide the word of God blah blah" or "Some of it isn't meant for Chilldren Blah Blah" then I submit to you that: If it isn't 100% "fit for children to read" then why should it be considered a "moral guide post"? Poppy, Tuberoot is right up there with Fireball in that I have anyone who posts answers "REPORTED" I have blocked...
How can I teach reading and math skills to children? I would like to teach my younger godchildren how to read and install in them math and critical thinking skills. I especially what to encourage the girls to have an interest in math and science, which girls have a tendency to like a 'softer' subjects like English, social studies, etc. I want the boys to do the same as well. How do I go about doing this? Any suggestions will greatly be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
How to predict how many children you are going to have by reading the lines on your palm? I remember once when i was younger my dad told me there was this line at the base of your pinky that told you how many children you were going to have. Does anyone know what exactly i should be looking for because all i see are a bunch of criss cross lines, or x's. Or a website that has instructions on how to find out would be helpful too. please no tarot.com, unless you have the exact weblink on how to find out. Just curious :D already have two
In a program to teach/help children with reading but? am already facing problems. Instead of having one child I have three, two seven year olds and one who is nine. They are not like children I have had contact with before, apparently they are allowed to watch family guy and south park. I had to listen to a long recap of a south park that I believe dealt with a homosexual sex act that was re-enacted for me. The nine year old is testing me and a bully over the two younger ones. She says what I consider inappropriate things ( swear words and recaps of south park for example ) I let everything slide the first day but I realize I need to get a handle on the situation before it just gets worse. I was thinking I saying something in the lines of " I do not appreciate talk/stories like that and while here with me please do not talk about adult matters or use vulgar language, if you continue too we wont be able to play the game I have planned at the end of our lesson" They are for a better word "rough" kids. How should I handle them pleas

Comic/Manga Readers: Would you please provide a list of comic books worth reading for children ages 9-16? I am a children's librarian and the chidren and teens have been requesting comic books. I do not know much about them other than the basics like Spiderman, Batman, and X-Men.. I am looking to purchase comics and mangas for children ages 9-16 for boys and girls. With your list would you specify which series, why you recomend it, and details about it like mild violence, romance, and 'watch for this though.' Thank You SO Much! ^_^
Richard Dawkins says children should grow up reading the Bible. Are you surprised? Ruth Gledhill interviewed Dawkins at his North Oxford home and wrote in her article: "Richard Dawkins believes that children should grow up reading the Bible and has a "soft spot" for the Church of England. He also believes some of the historic atrocities of human behaviour were not inspired by religion, but were a result of our "ruthless Darwinian past". And he believes in the possibility of a transcendent "intelligence" existing beyond the range of present human experience. It is just that he refuses to call it God. These are just some of the more surprising confessions to come from the man variously described as Britain's angriest atheist and the self-appointed Devil's chaplain.” http://www.virtueonline.org/portal/modules/news/article.php?storyid=5995 I'm surprised, particularly by his transcendent "intelligence" that is not God. Is anybody else surprised by this? EvolvedK: You're way too defensive and rather unfair. I provided the entire article. Did you want me to cut and paste a 15,000 word article, just to ask a question?
What percentage of children have become atheists after reading "The Golden Compass"? I assume the percentage must be greater than zero for some people to start an uproar, so I'm wondering what percentage of children have become atheists after reading the book (or seeing the movie). Dude: You're right that the percentage would need to be greater than the percentage of naturally occurring atheists by a statistically significant amount. You're also right about needing to prove causation. I think before we take those steps though, we need to determine what the percentage of children who convert to atheism is (because without that we can't do the other things). Edward J: There's a difference between indoctrinating children and letting them watch a movie. I don't think Narnia indoctrinates children, just like I don't think the Golden compass does.
