What other reading strategies would be good with 7th and 8th graders? I am teaching 7th and 8th graders. We are reading a book and I have run out of ideas of ways to have them read it. I have them partner reading, individually reading, using a strategy called fishbowl, girls read one day, boys the next, and have assigned each student a role to read. I have run out of new ideas and don't want to bore them by repeating things too much. Any other ideas on ways to split up the reading an keeping in lively for them?

Are reading and writing workshops considered research-based strategies? I have quite a bit of information on conducting reading and writing workshops, but it's all how individual teachers experiences conducting workshops. With NCLB and corrective action, our district is pushing research-based strategies. Does anyone know if there is any researched evidence that proves the effectiveness of using workshops? I still plan on using them as part of an action-research project next year, and would like some evidence more than personal experiences. Thanks.

Does reading strategies really help you with your test? For some reason, I don't pass when I do my reading strategies. My head starts hurting and then some of the questions I do when my head starts hurting, are answered wrong. These are the reading strategies: 1.Number your paragraph. 2.Underline the title. 3.Underline your subtitle. 4.Circle the picture. 5.Read the questions. 6.Read the story 3x. 7.Highlight key words. 8.Underline the question. 9.Look for your answer in the story. 10.Elimante the wrong answer(s). 11. Identify your answer by circling, putting a period, or underline it. 12. Put what paragraph number where you found your answer. I did those strategies on a practiced standardized test. But I got a 81 on it! When I just read the story and answer the questions, I missed 1! I got a 98 on that practiced standardized test! For some reason, my head starts hurting when I do those strategies and get lower grades. But my teacher insist that I do them. What to do
How do I successfully grasp information while reading a strategy book? When I read any book but specifically business strategy books I grasp the concepts and understand the ideas but will I need to take notes of certain steps and tips to apply them in the future or will just understanding what I read allow me to apply those strategies later? I would like to recall details from what I read without having to look at notes. Like If I have a conversation with someone I would like to be able to recite parts of what I read without referring to notes.
In reading comprehension strategies, what is meant by a self monitoring lesson? Thanks for the great answer, chinchin. My grad class assignment is to create a lesson that teaches students to self-monitor their comp of a story. As a major part ofmy lesson, i am required to create a self-checking form for students to use as they read. Do you think if a small group was reading and answering questions from a teacher generated list, that would work?

It's turning into full periods of reading this novel but I have to get through it. Suggestions on how to check that they're getting it? I've got the independent check stuff covered, but not the as we're reading checks. We've been pair sharing, but that's gotten old and we still have 6 more long chapters to go. Help?! What are the "rhetorical strategies" present in this document? http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/ap/students/english/ap05_frq_english_lang_b.pdf If you go to that link and go the 2nd page, there's an article there that I have to read and find "rhetorical strategies" present in the document. But after reading through it, I'm having trouble identifying them, and I could only come across a simile on lines 41 and 53-55. I need to find something that is apparent in the entire document, not just applying to a small part. I could really use your help here on this, so I would very much appreciate it if you decided to help me out. Thank you in advance.

Was I unclear about teaching reading to students who speak Ebonics? I may have been unclear in my question on teaching reading to students who speaks Ebonics. I was not suggesting that we teach Ebonics, the students who already know it, that would be beating a dead horse. However, it is a common dialect and these are the students who tend to score poorly on reading assessments. I was simply looking for ideas on which teaching strategies seem to be the most effective. I am asking if we should teach standard American English and reading to students who already speak Ebonics as if standard English is their second language or second dialect(whichever you choose). If the students are already speaking Ebonics, should we teach standard American English to them in order to enhance their reading skills? What other suggestions do you have for overcoming the Ebonics language challenge in order to produce an outstanding reading student?
