Opinions on Accelerated Math / Reading? I'm seeking opinions on the Accelerated Math and Accelerated Reading programs that many schools have adopted. Personally, I'm against it, but I'm willing to hear why it's such a popular program.
accelerated reading AR levels? Hi first post and need anyone to enlighten me on what grade the (AR) 11.8 reading level is. He's 9yrs old and assessed as 11.8 but school library doesn't go up that high, and the other kids in grade 4 range from 3.0 to 6.0. I'm too chicken to ask his teacher, we clashed when he only got a 'B' for reading mid year. The other parents i've asked think the AR levels match grade levels but no ones sure, so would love some help understanding the AR levels VS grade. JJ
My principal wants me to include a list about Accelerated Reader (reading.) And about chewing gum on the cst. My report that I have come up with so far: Good morning students, families, teachers, Mrs. Allavie and Mrs. Woodward. We gather here today for our promotion. We just want to start off by saying that this year has been a blessed year, but were pretty sure that all of the teachers are happy to see us go. We are so thankful for this year. When we think about how we’re getting older we can look back at how far we have come today. This is just amazing. We have improved so much from when we were in Kindergarten to being now being 6th graders. We have matured and we have moved on. We have had good times from Science Camp to Fiesta Village. Next year we will have moved on to a new school year with an all new school. Whether it’s Uni or Amelia. We all did so well persevering and keeping our heads up high, even when our hands were aching from all the writing throughout. We need to keep that same attitude when we walk through the doors of our new middle school. Where should reading&gum on cst go
(Accelerated Learning): Review after reading a textbook?? In A.Learning, when you sit to study, you study for 20-50mins, take a 10mins break then come back and review what you have "Learnt" and then begin a new 20-50mins session. What do you do though if you arent actually sitting down to learn but are reading and understanding a textbook, what do you do in that review period? Thanks x Reading a chapter of a textbook.

Is it possible that the expansion of the universe is being accelerated by black holes? I read an article about Hawking radiation and black holes some time ago, and I wonder if it is possible that black holes could actually be fueling the ever increasing expansion that we are seeing? My idea is this: That since a black hole has infinite density could that matter actually be pushing through the spacetime fabric and being observed as that apparent matter we see in vacuum. By this I mean the theory that vacuum actually contains billions of subatomic particles that are being created and destroyed every second. And that it is this energy that is accelerating the expansion we are observing.

reading comprehension and speed...? i am extremely good at reading and comprehending what i read, at school we are required to take tests through the Accelerated Reading program and according to it i can easily read and comprehend any material i choose, no matter the grade level, etc. at the moment our english teacher has us in litterature groups where in our groups we are reading a specific book, (not to sound conceeded) out of the 3 of us i have a higher over all GPA (and reading "level") but they both can read faster than myself, is this bad or what? we are reading the book The Pigman by Paul Zindel
Do gifted children have explicit legal rights to an accelerated education in Texas? My 4 year old son is very bright, but his teacher bases her pre-kindergarten curriculum on how fast the slowest child learns. For example, they are only working on letter recognition, but he can already read. He becomes very bored in class and has been acting out. I have read the Texas Educational Agengy's Parent's Rights Guide, but I can't seem to find any reference to gifted youngsters. My questions are: Do pre-k children have the explicit right to assessment testing? Do they have the explicit right to an accelerated education if it is deemed necessary by assessment testing? There are several other factors involved in this situation that are warranting an interview with the principal, and I would like to have my facts in front of me, as it were. Thanks!

Reading: Highlighting as you read? I came across this passage in a book on accelerated learning: "Each time you read, use a different color highlighter to go over the main ideas. Add question marks, exclamation points and other markers to help you process the information easier." Can anyone explain this? To me it means as you read a book, highlight with a colour say yellow. If you return to the book and continue reading later then use another colour however: 1.A) are you re-highlighting what you have already highlighted? B) If you highlight new info then why the change of colour, say chapter 1 is all in yellow, now chapter 2 will be in orange. C) If you havent even finished chapter 1, then it begins yellow, then orange and maybe finished in red. 2) How do you/would you use the 2nd part (..question marks, exclamation points&other markers to help you process the information easier) and where exactly would you places these symbols bearing in mind ure already highlighting with a colour&how does this help?
Math curriculum recommendations for accelerated homeschooler? My son is very strong in his math skills and finished his second grade Saxon math in three months. He is six years old. I am looking into a different curriculum because Saxon was too repetitious for him. He needs one or two exposures to a concept and "gets" it. I am looking for a book that streamlines the concepts and provides lots of critical thinking skills practice (like word problems). He is really excited about moving on to third grade math and I want him to keep his love and excitement and not burden him with a boring book. I have read about Singapore math, and am especially looking at it, have you any experience with that curriculum?
Copper Sun, Accelerated Reader? I am about to finish the book Copper Sun by Sharon Draper. I want to know the Accelerated Reader reading level for this book! Thank you so much! ~Tylerito

Is Accelerated Dial Up (I.E. PeoplePC) that much better than standard dial up? I thought it was too good to be true that I could get accelerated dial up for the same price as standard dial up, until I read this disclaimer at the bottom: PeoplePC Accelerated - With PeoplePC Accelerated certain web page text and graphics will load faster when compared to standard dial-up Internet service. Actual results may vary. PeoplePC Accelerated is only compatible with PeoplePC Online Internet service and specified Windows™ browsers. PeoplePC Accelerated is not Windows 95 compatible. It says "5x" faster internet, however does the acceleration really make a difference when downloading using different clients other than "specified we browsers" like World of Warcraft or Bearshare? Thanks in advance. Don't tell me to get DSL please. They don't offer it in my area. I've been waiting on it for 14 years. Ya sad right?
Is Adobe Flash accelerated by the GPU? Does having a better GPU (for example, nVidia, ATI, with latest official drivers installed) accelerate performance in Adobe flash player? I was reading Paul Otellini's keynote at last September's IDF, and he said: "If you take an example of YouTube, a 60-second, simple clip on YouTube today would have taken almost the full capacity of a microprocessor in 2003. Here we're comparing it to the first Pentium M, the chip that went inside the first Centrino, essentially would have been consumed running that one 60-second clip." I found that interesting, because I have a desktop with the oldest Pentium 4 processor in it (circa early 2001, I believe), with a nVidia GPU that was so-so at the time, and it easily runs YouTube videos full screen at full speed. Thanks...
Reading quizzes? My brother needs to work on his reading over the summer and I was wondering if there was any way to get free tests online over the book, rather than to pay for accelerated reader (AR). My brother is 10 years old and moving to 5th grade this next year. I forgot to tell 'yall that my brother isn't the most advanced at reading................................ his grade went from an A to a C+ during the last 9 weeks.
Accelerated nursing in US? I am a Bachelor of Science graduate and I would want to enter into an accelerated nursing course. I live in the Philippines but I don't think we have accelerated nursing here so I would want to study in the US instead. I'm thinking of NYU in New York and I have read they have prerequisite subjects. Is it possible that I take the prerequisites here in the Philippines first? I also would want to know about the cost of education there. I will be paying for my education so I also would want to know any school that is less costly but has quality education. Please help me with this one. Thanks =) Also, are there any accelerated nursing courses in the Philippines? Or if not, what school should I enrol to so that I would study at a lesser time?
My 11 year old absolutely HATES to read! How can I help him ..............? There has got to be a way for him to learn how to enjoy reading, but we haven't figured it out yet! He's very smart, and reads at an 8th grade level. His school does the accelerated reading program, so he has to read at least 2 chapter books a week. It's like pulling teeth! We take turns reading, and that works for a little while. The next day - back to hating it. Any ideas? Help!!! Thanks!! I should have added that he can only read selected books from the school library to be tested on.

Is this an okay essay??? (Sorry about not indenting paragraphs)? I sat in the car staring at numerous wheat and corn fields passing by as we were headed home. A broad smile was painted upon my face as joy overflowed my body. Today had been a very exciting day. I had won the Accelerated Reading award, surpassing all the students in my grade. Secondly, this evening Wichita Co. Junior High had held the 8th grade Graduation which I had been longing for since I was in elementary school. Last but not least, I graduated a High Honor student from Junior High which was quite an achievement. Those reasons made May 23, 2005 a very memorable day. Accelerated Reading awards are given to the student who earns the most points from reading out of his/her class. I had been hoping of getting one of the three awards given in my junior high years. Acquiring the award was quite a surprise, as the first two times I missed it by a few points. I had been very happy to have accomplished my goal. Eighth grade Graduation is a very special event in this small Kansas town. Every student is required to be dressed up and there are many practices to make sure the ceremony will go smoothly. Since young I had wished I was older and able to be a graduate. Walking down the isle with more than a 100 people cheering me on as I summed up the elementary and junior high years was quite an exhilarating feeling. Finally, what stunned me the most was the announcement that I had graduated a High Honor student. Although I received mostly A’s on my grades, I did receive an occasional failing grade. I thought I would have too many to win the award. There were only five High Honor, and Honor graduates and to be one of them was very exciting. This certainly made today unforgettable. I have had many memorable days in my life but May, 23 2005 had topped them all. Carrying out my goal of getting the Accelerated Reading award was very remarkable. Also graduating 8th grade and being High Honor graduate was the cherry on top of my ice cream.

We have this book report due on Friday and i have totally spaced out all month and I need to read my book all tonight and work on my book report all tomorrow so I can turn it in ontime. Here's the problem: The book!!! I'm a tenth grade reading level and the lowest I can go is sixth grade for an AR book. (accelerated reading) I left my 7th grade book report book at school!!! (not good!!) All I have left at home is a 5th grade book and a 4th grade book. The fifth grade book is like 400 pages and LONG AND BORING and I cant stay up ALL night, I have school tomorrow!! The fourth grade book is short and REALLY interesting and obviously im more drawn to this fourth grade book but it's two grades below my level. Do you think she'll mark me off points? awesome books!? So for my Language Arts class we read books and then we have 2 take AR (accelerated reading) tests on them. Anyways, I'm having trouble finding good AR books. I really liked the series, Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. I love her books sooo much, and I read all of them, so I finally ran out of her AR books to read. I really like Realistic Fiction books. Stories of real situations that happen to people. Any reccomendations? I can add details if needed! P.S. Books for like a teenage girl middle-schooler.

I'm really concerned about the CA school budget cuts and can't afford private school. I would like to prepare my child for this test so that she can at least be in this program. What history books are the US reading ? I'm always hearing from the Americans towards the British or French on sites like these comments like "without us, you'd be speaking german" or "we saved your ***es in World War II". Do the US even have history books ? While the US helped defeat the Germans, and only because the Japanese got them involved with the destruction of Pearl Harbour (the US couldn't have cared less about the fate of Europe otherwise), most of the damage to the German forces was dealt by the Russians and the British forces (about 90% of German casualties during WW II). The Germans had for the most part lost the war and were being overwhelmed by the Soviets counterattack. The US merely accelerated the German defeat which was inevitable on the Eastern front by the Russians but would have taken much longer and had many more casualties without German forces diverted to fighting the Allied forces. World War II was essentially won by the Russians; the US only helped, same as the British. In regards to the comment about the 300,000 helping to overrun Russia, those forces would have remained whether the US entered the war or not, merely due to the British and the mere possibility of the US entering the war (even if they weren't going to); those forces also would have only applied towards the defense of Germany, Russia had already broken the attack from Germany by the time the US had landed on Normandy (the attack on Normandy was meant to coincide with the Soviet attack on Berlin). I'm not going to get into a discussion of what if, we know how it happened. I'm merely stating that to suggest the US somehow won World War II as many americans seem to think is ludicrous. Its nice to score the game winning point/goal and its the event that makes the win possible, but you don't take credit for singlehandedly winning the entire game for having done so.
