Any recommendations on how to improve reading skills for a first grader? Hi everyone, My little brother, who is almost 7, is in jeopardy of being held back in 1st grade and I want to help him as much as possible so there might be a chance to improve on his deficiencies over this summer. His main problems include reading and writing. Is there any type of audio program or reading program that can help him with reading? Any type of writing program for math? Also any types of books that teachers might recommend? I'm really committed to helping him and I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks a bunch! :)

How do you improve reading skills? I was going through the table of contents in the book and saw something about learning disabilities. Well, I have a learning disability and when I am reading something, even if it is a textbook like a big US History book, I am just so overwhelmed! I'm taking US History online right now and just feel myself very overwhelmed with what's going on. It's so many words and information that it's quite to figure out how to draw a big picture of what's going on and what you're supposed to know. One other problem is once I start reading, I might know what I'm reading for a few minutes then just lose it, getting my mind on something else while just looking at the words.

How can my boyfriend improve his reading skills? My boyfriend has trouble reading, he's 23 and has had a very stressful past moving around, a broken home, and bad influences that interfered with him staying on a good track all throughout his years in school. Even though his life has improved, the result of his past is affecting him now. When he reads he will often mix up vowels or skip letters all together when pronouncing the word. In 40 days, I have to take the SAT, while I need to work on every area, my main problem is Critical reading. My New Years Resolution is to read more but since I really need to get my score up, think reading the shorter articles first should help me get used to reading also. Shorter articles are most similar to what I will read the on the SAT and it will be easier for me to find the main idea and things like that. After I take it however, I will begin to read other books to get me ready for the volume of reading I will be expected to do in college. Even if I dont score as high as I would like (650-750 in each area) shouldn't it improve at least by October if I take it again?
